Actually, you are right there, for home use it's a good choice. Few viruses, reasonable speed, simple operation. I was commenting more on usage in the business world.

Depends on what you need Jeff. If you only need Word.Excel and Outlook then Office Basic is available for around 160. If the state is going to require you to use it to be compatible then you may want to stick to the Office products.

As far as version. A few will complain about the newer stuff but that's the way it will move in the future. No stopping progress whether it be good or bad.

I'll speak for the minority...I have used Office since whenever it was that it first came out. I installed 2007 yesterday. I like the front end in Outlook and I think I like Excel and Word. I have not had any issues figuring out how to do things. It's different but that's ok with me. I can give a better review after I have more time with it. Oh, I also run Vista at home and have for the past 6 months. We have three laptops at home all running Vista. Again, it is different than XP but I have not had any negative experiences with it. I think some people dislike Microsoft products just because they are Microsoft. That's ok I guess - I'm that way with other things. I don't like GM products just because I don't like GM.

I am also looking for a new anti-virus. I have had Norton and McAfee. I don't like speaking to India when I call tech support. For that - I will find a new, domestic program when my current subscription is up. I run AVG at the office and may go that way.

COMODO Anti-Virus

Avira Anti-Virus

avast! 4 Home Edition

AVG Free Edition

There are four different anti-virus suites, all highly rated, all free of charge. The major thing lacking in free versions is the option of live support, and in-depth scheduling of updates. Many of the free ones only offer one update per day, whereas the pay ones automatically update multiple times per day. Critical? Depends on who you ask. All I can say is that I've had more virus issues with the likes of Norton and McAfee than I ever have with any of the free ones. In fact, I use some of the free ones at times to troubleshoot PCs at work that are infected, that the corporate licensed anti-virus (TrendMicro) fails to ever catch or clean.

So, to each their own, but if you want some free ones, have at it.

Other good programs are:

CCleaner

SpywareBlaster

Spybot Search & Destroy

I have a huge list at work of a ton of freebie tools and utilities to keep your computer running like new. When I'm back in the office tomorrow I'll try to remember and post it again.

Yes, you are speaking for the "minority". Most folks and especially businesses are reluctant to upgrade and the reason is very simple....incompatibility with existing hardware and/or software, not to mention the productivity drop by users having to re-learn how to do things.

A very small example... I have an HP ScanJet (sorry, forgot the model). Vista doesn't recognize it, Microsoft doesn't supply drivers for it and HP will not (and they've stated this) develop Vista drivers for it so, effectively, my perfectly good scanner that works just fine in Windows XP is nothing but a paperweight in Vista.

Does anyone have MS Office 2003 AND OpenOffice installed on the same computer?

And has there been any problems with that?

No problems here, Ive got them both on my machine at home, running XP. Office 2003 will lock up when trying to use Outlook2003 on Vista

Works fine on my system at home but I don't run OpenOffice at home...just Office 2003 on Vista Home Premium. (yes, I had to take it coz it came with my new PC which I had to buy in a panic so to speak but it seems to be working fine except I can't use my scanner no more :crying: )
