spingley Posted September 9, 2008 #1 Posted September 9, 2008 I noticed a noise coming from the rear end area when slowing down and coasting with clutch pulled in, I thought it was coming from the hub splines and pins needing greased so I pulled the rear wheel and greased them both. The sound is still there, it is a lower pitched sound that kind of warbles. So now I am wondering if it might be the u-joint as the bike has 57K. Does anyone know what is involved in checking u-joint for wear, or even replacing if it needs it?
1BigDog Posted September 9, 2008 #2 Posted September 9, 2008 You got to pull your final drive assembly off and the driveshaft will come out with it. Most likely the splines on the u-joint end are dry. If your rear tire is cupped, even slightly you will also hear/feel vibration and a dull roar coming from the rear. Once you pull the final drive unit, the drive shaft is press fit in. Dont lose the little spring that rests behing the driveshaft and the final drive unit.
spingley Posted September 10, 2008 Author #3 Posted September 10, 2008 I think that sounds do-able, thanks!
Jethroish Posted September 10, 2008 #4 Posted September 10, 2008 Have lots of patience for putting the drive shft back into the U-joint. There is a small rubber plug on top of the U-joint housing. Pull that and you can get a wire in there to hold the u-joint up to put the shft back in. I thought this was the toughest part of removing and re-installing the final drive. Maybe some one knows a trick.

What grease did you use? Honda Moly60 is the BEST on splines!!!!!! Were your splines worn much? were the faces shiny without a step worn into them? Did you pull the drive shaft and grease the splines on the front end????? How is the rear gear lube? What type do you use? When was it changed last? how much metal filings were on the magnet on the drain plug? The sound is still there, it is a lower pitched sound that kind of warbles. Look in the Service manual starting on page 4-104 for the Universal Joint maintenance.

I only had some Slick50 grease with PTFE so I used it, The splines did not appear to be worn and I was surprised at how much grease was on them, at both ends of the drive shaft. I replaced the gear lube, it looked new and there was practically nothing on the plug magnet. All in all I was very happy with what I saw. I pulled the large boot back just in front of the swingarm/plastic plug to see the U-joint and I turned the shaft back and forth and did not see any play or hear/feel anything unusual. I greased the large wheel bearing, and both bearings felt smooth. Maybe the noise is normal, I just got the bike recently so I am not sure . The only thing that I was not sure about was where to position the axle shaft before tightening the pinchbolt, When I first removed the axle bolt the swingarm forks spread apart at least 1/4". I did not put it back like that as I was afraid of cracking the swingarm by squeezing the forks together too much. The manual said nothing about it.
KiteSquid Posted September 11, 2008 #7 Posted September 11, 2008 You may want to use Moly60 next time after reading these three articles: Read THIS about Molybdenum disulfide. read the Use as a lubricant section. Read THIS web article too. but I dont want to spend the big bucks on Krytox Teflon Bearing Grease..... read THIS thread too.

The next time I replace the tire I am going to order some of the Honda Moly and regrease everything. Thanks!
